How Silver Jewellery Pricing Works (Step-by-Step Statutory Breakdown)

When silver crossed historic highs of over ₹1,00,000 per kilogram in India, transparency in jewellery billing became paramount. Unlike gold where 22K is standard, silver articles range from 800 (anklets) to 999 (pure investment bars).

1. Net Weight Isolation

Jewellers must deduct all cubic zirconia, pearls, colored beads, and lac filling from the gross weight. Silver rate must strictly be applied to net metal only.

2. Purity Fineness Adjustment

A benchmark rate quoted for 999 silver is adjusted: 925 Sterling = 999 Rate × (92.5 / 99.9). An 800 purity payal costs 20% less per gram than fine silver.

3. Segregated GST Billing

Under Indian tax law, pure metal carries 3% GST, while separate labor / making charges carry 5% GST, protecting buyers from double taxation.

The Statutory Billing Formula

Total Invoice = [Net_Weight × (Silver_Rate_per_kg / 1000) × (Purity / 999)] + Making_Charges + ₹35 + GST

Worked Example: Purchasing a 150g Traditional Payal (800 Silver)

Sunita visits a jewellery showroom in Jaipur to purchase a pair of traditional Rajasthani payals weighing 150 grams. The prevailing benchmark price of 999 fine silver is ₹98,000 per kg.

Gross Article Weight:150 Grams (Zero non-silver stones)
Purity Grade:800 Purity (80% Silver, 20% Alloy)
Effective Metal Rate:₹98.00 × (0.80 / 0.999) = ₹78.48 per gram
Raw Pure Silver Value:150g × ₹78.48 = ₹11,772
Making Charges:₹15 per gram = ₹2,250
Statutory GST:3% on metal (₹353) + 5% on making (₹113) = ₹466

The Invoice Summary:

  • Subtotal Before Tax: ₹11,772 (metal) + ₹2,250 (making) + ₹35 (hallmarking) = ₹14,057.
  • Total Taxes: ₹466 in statutory Goods and Services Tax.
  • Final Invoice Payable: ₹14,523 (yielding an effective all-inclusive cost of ₹96.82 per gram).

Frequently Asked Questions (Silver Rate & Jewellery Pricing)

Clear answers to common questions in your preferred language.

The standard billing formula for silver jewellery in India is: Final Price = [(Gross Weight - Stone Weight) × (Silver Rate per Gram × Purity Factor)] + Making Charges + BIS Hallmarking Fee + 3% GST on Metal + 5% GST on Making Charges. If you are exchanging old silver, melting loss (typically 5%–10%) is deducted, and the remaining value is subtracted from the total invoice.
