How PPF Maturity and Form H Extension Work (Official Rules)
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a 15-year sovereign savings instrument offering 7.10% annual compound interest with complete Exempt-Exempt-Exempt (EEE) tax status. Depositing the maximum ₹1,50,000 annually generates a tax-free corpus of ₹40.68 Lakhs at 15 years. Accounts can be extended in 5-year blocks with contribution (Form H, subject to a 60% withdrawal cap) or without contribution.
How the Calculation Works (Statutory Interest & Timing Rules)
Unlike standard bank fixed deposits that compound quarterly, PPF interest is determined by strict statutory timing rules defined in the Public Provident Fund Scheme 2019:
Monthly Interest Accrual
Interest is calculated on the lowest balance standing to your credit between the close of the 5th day and the end of each month. To earn full interest for the month, always deposit on or before the 5th.
Annual Compounding
While monthly interest is computed every month, it is officially credited to the subscriber's account once per financial year on 31st March, compounding into the opening balance for the subsequent year.
Zero Tax Liability
PPF interest is 100% exempt from income tax, unlike bank FDs where interest exceeding ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for seniors) attracts Section 194A TDS and is taxed at your highest slab rate.
PPF Extension Guidelines: With vs Without Contribution (Form H)
At the completion of the 15-year tenure, depositors have two official choices under Rule 13 of the PPF Scheme 2019:
Submit Form H Within 1 Year
- Must submit Form H to your bank/post office before completing 1 year from maturity.
- You can continue depositing up to ₹1,50,000 per financial year and claim Section 80C deductions.
- The 60% Withdrawal Cap (Rule 13(2)): You can withdraw up to a maximum of 60% of the balance standing at the commencement of the 5-year block, spread across annual installments.
Zero Paperwork Default
- Applies automatically if no Form H is submitted within 1 year of maturity.
- No fresh deposits are permitted. Any accidental deposit earns 0% interest and is refunded.
- Unlimited Annual Withdrawals: You can withdraw any amount once every financial year. The remaining balance continues to earn the full 7.10% tax-free interest!

Frequently Asked Questions (Public Provident Fund)
How much do I get if I deposit ₹1.5 Lakh every year in PPF for 15 years?+
Depositing the maximum statutory limit of ₹1,50,000 annually (total investment of ₹22,50,000 over 15 years) at the current 7.10% p.a. interest rate yields an approximate tax-free maturity corpus of ₹40,68,209. The total interest earned is approximately ₹18,18,209, all of which is 100% exempt from income tax under Section 10(11).
How does PPF Form H extension work after 15 years?+
Under Rule 13 of the Public Provident Fund Scheme 2019, you can extend your PPF account in blocks of 5 years indefinitely. To continue making fresh deposits (up to ₹1.5L/year), you must submit Form H within 1 year from the date of maturity. During this 5-year block, you can withdraw up to a maximum of 60% of the balance standing at the beginning of the block.
What happens if I extend my PPF account without submitting Form H?+
If you do not submit Form H within 1 year of maturity, your account automatically defaults to "Extension without Contribution". Your existing balance continues to earn the full 7.10% tax-free interest, and you are permitted to withdraw any amount once per financial year. However, any fresh deposits made without Form H will earn zero interest and will not qualify for Section 80C deductions.
When can I take a loan against my PPF balance and at what interest rate?+
You can apply for a loan against your PPF account from the 3rd financial year up to the 6th financial year. The maximum loan amount is capped at 25% of the balance at your credit at the end of the 2nd financial year preceding the application year. The loan carries a subsidized interest rate of just 1% per annum above the prevailing PPF rate (i.e. 8.10%), provided it is repaid within 36 months.
When can I make partial withdrawals from my PPF account?+
Partial withdrawals are permitted from the 7th financial year onwards (i.e. after completing 6 years). The maximum withdrawal amount is limited to the lower of: (a) 50% of the balance at the end of the 4th financial year preceding the year of withdrawal, or (b) 50% of the balance at the end of the immediately preceding financial year.
