Rated 4.9/5 based on 2,260 user calculations for EPF Interest & Passbook Balance Calculator.
Unlike fixed deposits where compounding happens quarterly or annually, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation calculates interest under Paragraph 60 of the EPF Scheme through three distinct rules:
Monthly Interest Accrual
Interest is computed on the progressive running balance at the close of every month at $r = 8.25\% \div 12 = 0.6875\%$ per month. Cumulative interest across all 12 months is credited in a single transaction on March 31.
3.67% EPF vs 8.33% EPS
The employer’s 12% is legally split: 8.33% (statutorily capped at ₹1,250/mo based on the ₹15,000 wage ceiling) is diverted to the pension pool (EPS), while 3.67% plus any uncapped excess credits directly to the member passbook.
Section 10(11) Taxability
Under CBDT Rule 9D, if an employee’s contribution exceeds ₹2,50,000 in a financial year, interest on the excess contribution is separated into a taxable passbook ledger and taxed at slab rates.
Scenario: Karthik earns a monthly Basic Salary + DA of ₹45,000. His current EPF passbook balance is ₹1,50,000. His company provides a 5% average annual increment, and the EPFO interest rate remains at 8.25% p.a.
| Contribution / Wealth Milestone | Statutory Formula / Breakdown | Monthly / Year 1 Amount | 15-Year Accumulated Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employee Contribution (12%) | 12% of Basic Pay (100% to EPF) | ₹5,400 / month | ₹13,98,420 |
| Employer EPF Contribution | Total 12% minus EPS ₹1,250 cap | ₹4,150 / month | ₹11,73,420 |
| Employer EPS Pension Fund | 8.33% capped at ₹1,250/month | ₹1,250 / month | ₹2,25,000 (Pension Pool) |
| Opening Balance Carried Forward | Existing member passbook balance | ₹1,50,000 | ₹1,50,000 |
| Total Compound Interest Earned | 8.25% p.a. monthly running balance | ₹17,466 (Year 1) | +₹29,76,825 |
| Total Accumulated EPF Corpus | Contributions + Accrued Interest | — | ₹56,98,665 |
*Result: By investing continuously for 15 years, interest earnings (₹29.76 Lakhs) surpass Karthik's own contributions (₹13.98 Lakhs), proving the power of EPFO monthly compounding.

Frequently Asked Questions (Employees’ Provident Fund & Interest)
How is EPF interest calculated by the EPFO?
Under Paragraph 60 of the Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme 1952, interest is computed on the monthly running balance of the member’s account, not on the year-end closing balance. Each month, the monthly rate (8.25% ÷ 12 = 0.6875%) is applied to the running balance (opening balance + monthly employee and employer EPF additions). The cumulative interest of all 12 months is officially credited into the passbook on March 31 of each financial year.
How is the employer 12% EPF contribution split between EPF and EPS?
While the employee’s entire 12% contribution goes to their EPF account, the employer’s 12% contribution is bifurcated: 8.33% of basic pay (statutorily capped at ₹1,250/month based on the ₹15,000 wage ceiling) goes into the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), and the remaining 3.67% (plus any excess above the EPS cap) is credited to the employer EPF account.
Is EPF interest taxable above ₹2.5 Lakhs employee contribution?
Yes. Under Section 10(11) and 10(12) of the Income Tax Act (introduced via Finance Act 2021), interest earned on an employee’s voluntary and mandatory contributions exceeding ₹2,50,000 in a financial year is taxable as "Income from Other Sources". The EPFO maintains two separate accounts in the member passbook: a non-taxable contribution account and a taxable contribution account.
Can I withdraw my full EPF balance before retirement at 58?
You can withdraw the full EPF balance if you remain unemployed for 2 or more consecutive months, or upon reaching the retirement age of 58 years. Partial advances are allowed for specific milestones: house construction or purchase (after 5 years), children’s higher education or marriage (after 7 years), and critical illness medical emergencies (no minimum service requirement).
Is EPF withdrawal taxable if service is less than 5 continuous years?
Yes. If an employee withdraws their EPF balance before completing 5 years of continuous service, the entire accumulated amount (employee contribution, employer contribution, and accrued interest) becomes taxable in the year of withdrawal. TDS at 10% is deducted under Section 192A if the withdrawal amount exceeds ₹50,000 (20% if PAN is not submitted).
