How Step-Up SIP Calculation Works (Actuarial Monthly Compounding)
Unlike a standard flat Systematic Investment Plan where the monthly contribution remains frozen for years, a Step-Up (Top-Up) SIP incorporates the mathematical power of a growing annuity. Your contributions increase in tandem with your earning capability, while each newly added tranche continues to compound through mutual fund equities.
At the start of each month, the designated installment is credited to your portfolio. Returns compound at the monthly rate: i = (Annual Return % / 100) / 12.
Every 12 completed months, your monthly installment escalates either by your chosen percentage (e.g., SIP × 1.10) or fixed cash addition (e.g., +₹1,000).
Because capital is added earlier in your career, the cumulative compounding curve bends upward much steeper than a late-career lump sum investment.
Mathematical Formula for Step-Up SIP
The future value of a Step-Up SIP is calculated as the sum of future values of each monthly tranche:
Where P_t is the monthly installment applicable in month t, i is the monthly nominal return rate (CAGR / 12), and N is the total number of investment months(Tenure in Years × 12).
