How SWP Calculation Works (FIFO Unit Redemption & Inflation Step-Up)
Unlike bank interest which triggers full income tax on every rupee earned, an SWP is a partial redemption of units. Each monthly installment represents a blend of capital return (tax-free) and capital gains (taxable).
Units redeemed first are those purchased earliest. Gains qualify for 12.5% Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) under Section 112A, enjoying the ₹1,25,000 annual exemption limit.
Every 12 completed months, your monthly withdrawal amount escalates by your chosen inflation rate (e.g., +6%) to protect against food, utility, and medical inflation.
The remaining balance compounds at the monthly nominal rate: (CAGR / 12). As long as the withdrawal rate remains below portfolio growth, your corpus survives perpetually.

Worked Example: Retiring in Pune with ₹50 Lakhs Mutual Fund SWP
Mr. Sharma, aged 60, retires from a private engineering firm in Pune with a ₹50,00,000 gratuity and PF corpus. Instead of locking the entire money in a 7.25% taxable Bank FD (which would yield ₹30,200/mo before 30% slab tax, leaving only ₹20,800/mo post-tax), he invests in a diversified equity flexicap and hybrid mutual fund portfolio targeting a 10.5% CAGR.
The Tax & Longevity Advantage:
- Post-Tax Payout: Under Section 112A, the first ₹1,25,000 in annual LTCG is completely exempt. His effective lifetime tax drag is less than 3.2%, compared to 31.2% on a bank FD.
- Tax Savings: Mr. Sharma saves over ₹21.4 Lakhs in taxes over his retirement compared to an FD.
- Leftover Legacy: At age 80 (Year 20), after harvesting over ₹1.5 Crores in monthly living expenses, his remaining portfolio still holds approximately ₹40 Lakhs for his family.
